Our History
Miramar Links boasts a rich and resilient history that is woven into the fabric of Wellington’s sporting identity.
The club was founded in 1905, with its first members playing on leased farmland in Karori. In 1909, the club moved to its current home on the Miramar peninsula, celebrating the opening with a gala carnival and special trams hired to bring guests from the city.
Over the following decades, Miramar flourished into one of New Zealand’s premier clubs. It has a prestigious tournament history, having hosted the New Zealand Open and the New Zealand PGA Championship twice each (1926 and 1939), as well as the New Zealand Amateur and Ladies’ Amateur.
In 2010, the club hosted the national interprovincial tournament. A then 13-year-old phenom named Lydia Ko led her team to victory, recording eight consecutive wins—all under par—and earning the player of the tournament award. Resilience Against the Odds: Our history has also been defined by a 70-year “battle” for land. Since 1954, neighboring Wellington Airport has required club land for development. While many feared the club would disappear or be reduced to a minor facility, our members and board repeatedly fought to preserve the club’s future.
Our Evolution: Reimagined for the 21st Century
While we honor our past, we are firmly focused on the future. In response to the growing needs of our neighbor, Wellington International Airport, the club chose to embrace a bold new chapter. Backed by a $31 million land agreement, we have embarked on a massive redevelopment to create a sustainable, world-class sporting and social hub.
We have transitioned from a traditional 18-hole course into a modern, vibrant social and golfing hub. This $16.2 million redevelopment ensures that Miramar Links remains a landmark destination for another century.
World-Class Design
At the heart of our transformation is a new 9-hole Members’ Course designed by world-renowned architect Scott Macpherson has utilized every inch of our unique urban landscape to create a course that is both fun and strategically challenging.

Miramar Links is your local hub, with a passion for building solid community relationships. A non-profit organization, any surplus revenues are reinvested into the club to ensure we continue to grow and evolve.
